Hello and Welcome!

This is your Care of Magical Creatures Class, held at Hagrid's Hut.  I am your teacher, Cat Skyfire, House Ravenclaw, also known as Crookshanks.  The classroom is located at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Hagrids_Hut/?yguid=120161078 , and questions can be directed there.  Here you will find your lessons, tests, and other sundries.

About the Class

Care of Magical Creatures is an important part of wizard life.  There are creatures all around us, and we must live in some form of harmony with them.  Knowing how to treat them should we encounter them is key to wise wizarding.  After all, greet certain creatures incorrectly, and you may well be eaten.  Every other week will reveal a new aspect to magical creatures and an assignment.  There will be a final exam.  Due to some incidents under a previous teacher (My apologies and respect to R. Hagrid, Gamekeeper), no actual beasts will be used during this course.  Images and descriptions will have to suffice, until such time as regulations change.  Your required materials are quills, ink, and parchment.  If you have the book "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" by Newt Scamander, so much the better.

Grading

Letter Grade Percentage     Points Given
A (Excellent) 90-100% 20 points
B (Above Average)     80-89% 15 points
C (Average) 70-79% 10 points
D (Below Average) 60-69% 5 point
F (Unacceptable) < 60% 0 points, and a rap on the knuckles with a wand.
X (Excused) 15 points

In addition, two twenty-five (25) point bonuses will be given out at the end of the term to the two students who I think have worked the hardest during the term.  Or have amused me the most.

Keep in mind, I tend to do the actual grading on a two assignment cycle, before submitting the points.

Assignments

Students will be responsible for lessons, readings, and assignments that are posted for class use. Assignments will be due by the date noted for the assignment--no exceptions. If you need to be excused from an assignment, please let me know immediately.  I will accept one Excused, unless you can provide me with a signed note from your mother, but it had better be a good note.

If a student fails to complete an assignment by the due date, they will lose one letter grade value for every week delayed.

All assignment answers should be in your own words.  Do not copy the lesson directly for your answer.

All assignment and test answers are to be submitted to me by e-mail at comc@starpaw.com .  If you click on the e-mail address in the assignment, it will insert the subject of the year and assignment.

Testing

There will be one final exam.  The value of the test will depend on where in the month it falls.  The first test I gave was 40 points, all of April's points.  Failure to complete a test will result in an automatic Unacceptable (F), and two whacks on the knuckles with a wand.
